Men may have larger noses than women because they generally have more muscle, demanding larger noses to breathe in more oxygen, researchers say. Modern humans have smaller noses than ancient humans, including Neanderthals, the closest extinct relatives of modern humans.

Scientists have suggested human nose size is linked to how much oxygen a person's body needs — the skeletons of ancient humans suggest they had larger body masses than modern humans, and so may have needed larger noses to help supply them with the greater levels of oxygen those bodies would have needed. However, because fossil skeletons of ancient humans are often fragmented and incomplete, researchers could not confirm whether nose size was linked with body mass.

Past research of a wide range of modern humans globally also revealed that men generally have larger noses than women, and typically have larger nasal cavities and airways behind the nose as well. In addition, men consume more oxygen during nasal breathing than women. Still, this did not confirm that differences in nose size are due to how much oxygen people need — perhaps nose size was linked to some other function, or no function at all.

To help answer these questions about nose size, researchers analyzed when nose size begins to change in the sexes.

The researchers found that males and females had similar nose sizes when they were young. However, male noses usually start growing larger than female noses during adolescence, coinciding with how males generally consume more oxygen and energy than females upon puberty.

All in all, the male noses they examined were about 10 percent larger than female noses on average. "As body size increases in males and females during growth, males exhibit a disproportionate increase in nasal size," said study lead author Nathan Holton, a biological anthropologist at the University of Iowa. "This follows the same pattern as energetic variables such as oxygen consumption." Males typically gain more lean muscle during adolescence than females, which demands more energy and oxygen. The finding that male noses may get larger during adolescence as well suggests nose size is linked with oxygen consumption. These findings might also yield insights on human evolution.

The researchers acknowledge their research looked at fewer than 40 people, all of European descent, which might raise questions about whether or not these findings apply generally to all men and women. Still, the fact that past findings suggest men generally have larger noses than women globally suggests this research could hold true of people overall.

Onion is a member of the Allium family and is rich in sulfur containing compounds that are responsible for its pungent odor and for many of onion’s health promoting effects.

Cardiovascular Benefits
There is evidence that sulfur compounds found in onion work in an anti clotting capacity and help prevent the unwanted clumping together of blood platelet cells. There is also evidence showing that onion’s sulfur compounds can lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides and improve cell membrane function in red blood cells as well. The benefits of onion in the overall dietary context extend to prevention of heart attack. The outstanding flavonoid content of onions supports these research findings.

Bone and connective tissue benefits
Human studies have shown that onion can help increase your bone density and may have special benefit on women of menopausal age who are experiencing loss of bone density. Plus, there is evidence that women who have passed the age of menopause may be able to lower their risk of hip fracture through daily eating of onions. In this research on bone density in older women, very rare eating of onion like once a month or less did not provide much benefit. Daily consumption of onion boosts benefits for bone density. So do not skimp on onions when you are incorporating them into your diet plan. The high sulfur content of onions may provide direct benefits to your connective tissue as many of your connective tissue components require sulfur for their formation.

Anti inflammatory benefits
This allium vegetable has nevertheless been shown to provide important anti inflammatory response. A unique sulfur molecule found in the bulb portion of the onion has been shown to inhibit the activity of macrophages- specific white blood cells that play a major role in your immune system and one of their defense activities is the triggering of large scale inflammatory responses. Onion’s antioxidants provide you with anti inflammatory sources. These antioxidants help prevent fatty acids oxidation in your body. When you have lower levels of oxidized fatty acids, your body produces fewer inflammatory messaging molecules and your level of inflammation is kept in check.

Cancer protection
Onion has been shown to lower the risk of several cancers, even when you consume it in only moderate amounts. Colorectal, laryngeal and ovarian cancers are the types for which risk is reduced along with moderate amounts of dietary onion. Do not err on the side of small onion servings or infrequent onion intake if you want to obtain the full cancer related benefits of this veggie. Try to include at least one whole onion in the recipe. In terms of individual portion sizes when you sit down to eat, try to consume the equivalent of half onion.

Other health benefits
Onions have shown potential for improvement of blood sugar balance, help prevent bacterial infection. Along with sulfur compounds, the flavonoid quercetin found in onion helps provide these antibacterial benefits. Some studies suggest that length of storage for onion that has been chopped but not cooked and duration of heat exposure in this case involving exposure to steam for ten minutes can affect some of onion’s health benefits. For these reasons, special care is needed in the storage, handling and cooking of this vegetable.

A clam named 'Ming' has been confirmed as the world’s oldest animal at 507 years old.

Ming saw off Queen Elizabeth I, the English Civil War, the entire Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution and two World Wars.

But its life came to an abrupt end seven years ago when scientists from Bangor University dredged the seabed near Iceland as part of a study into climate change.

Not knowing the long life of the mollusc, researchers at Bangor University opened its shell for analysis, killing Ming in the process.

By counting the number of rings visible on the inside shell of the mollusc, they initially calculated that Ming was an incredible 405 years old.

Scientists have now admitted they made a mistake- and now believe it to be 100 years older than first thought.

Ming's life came to an abrupt end seven years ago when scientists from Bangor University dredged the seabed near Iceland (pictured) as part of a study into climate change

‘We got it wrong the first time and maybe we were a bit hasty publishing our findings back then,’ ocean scientist Paul Butler from Bangor University told ScienceNordic.

‘But we are absolutely certain that we’ve got the right age now.’

The problem with the original calculation was that some of Ming's growth rings on the inside of the shell had become too compressed to be seen.

The researchers have now recalculated the age of Ming by looking at the growth rings on the outside of the shell.

The ‘new’ age means that the mollusc was born in 1499.

By counting the number of rings visible on the outer shell of the mollusc, researchers calculated that Ming was an incredible 507 years old

By examining the oxygen isotopes in the growth rings, scientists can find out the sea temperature at the time when the shell came into being.

What’s even more fascinating, however, are the lessons that the Ming could teach scientists about ageing.

A few years ago, charity Help the Aged, gave the marine biologists from Bangor University £40,000 to investigate why this animal lives so long.

The charity hopes the university will be able to help unlock the secret to human longevity, or at least make old age a little more palatable.

‘If, in Arctica islandica, evolution has created a model of successful resistance to the damage of ageing, it is possible that an investigation of the tissues of these real life Methuselahs might help us to understand the processes of ageing,’ said researchers Chris Richardson.

After studying ten people, researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute found that an adequate night’s sleep helps make a person look more attractive. Without sleep, participants exhibited drooping eyes and aggravated faces. Each participant was kept awake for 31 hours, and according to the study, their appearance took a noticeable nosedive as a result. Fourty ‘observers’ compared before and after photos of the study’s ten sleep-deprived participants. They noticed that the subjects had developed swollen eyelids, bloodshot eyes, and dark under-eye circles after going without sleep for more than a day. ‘We confirmed that sleep deprived people are perceived as more fatigued, less attractive, sadder, and less healthy than when they are rested,’ researchers wrote in their findings, which were published in the medical journal Sleep. 'We confirmed that sleep deprived people are perceived as more fatigued, less attractive, sadder, and less healthy than when they are rested' They claim that their study’s results confirm ‘the colloquial notion of beauty sleep.’ Study participants also exhibited more facial wrinkles, which research team leader Tina Sundelin attributes to the fact ‘that when you sleep the blood flow to your skin increases dramatically…it thus seemed likely that sleep loss would affect the skin.' But more than appearance, sleep deprivation also affected the study participants’ moods. Observers felt that they had developed droopy frowns, which was interpreted as a sign of sadness and mental fatigue. Sundelin says that ‘sleep loss is indeed related to a negative mood…we also seem to be more emotional in general when we don’t get enough sleep.’ It is easiest to observe the effects of sleep deprivation on a human’s face because they ‘contain a lot of information on which humans base their interactions with each other, how fatigued a person appears may affect how others behave towards them,’ Sundelin said in a press release announcing the results of her study.
